Airtime and Data Borrowing in Nigeria Just Changed Overnight

The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) has officially approved five new companies to provide airtime and data lending services in Nigeria as of April 2026.
What Just Happened?
Following new regulations introduced under the Digital, Electronic, Online or Non-Traditional (DEON) Consumer Lending Regulations 2025, telecom operators like MTN, Airtel, Glo, and 9mobile temporarily suspended their airtime/data borrowing services to comply with the law.
Now, the FCCPC has stepped in to sanitize the industry and ensure transparency by licensing approved providers.
List of Approved Airtime & Data Lenders (2026)
The FCCPC has approved the following companies:
- Total TIM Nigeria Limited
- Rane Interactive Medien CLS Limited
- Mode NG Applications Nigeria Limited
- Cloud Interactive Associate Limited
- Coverage Broadband Limited
These companies are expected to operate via mobile apps and digital platforms, not the traditional USSD format you’re used to.
Important Clarification (Don’t Miss This!)
There has been confusion online, but here’s the truth:
Airtime borrowing has NOT been banned in Nigeria.
The FCCPC clearly stated that:
- No ban was placed on airtime/data lending
- Any service disruption is due to operator compliance issues, not government prohibition
What Changes for You?
Instead of dialing shortcodes like *303#, you’ll now:
- Use mobile apps to borrow airtime or data
- Deal with licensed fintech providers, not telcos
- Enjoy clearer repayment terms
This is a major shift in Nigeria’s telecom and fintech ecosystem.
While it may feel inconvenient at first, the long-term goal is simplly to protect users and create a fair digital lending system.
