Rivers State Politics With Consequences: President Bola Tinubu Suspended Governor Fubara
Rivers State is one of the important and valuable states in Nigeria as it powers the economy of the nation through her vast oil resources. The state is one of the states that foreign investors feel so much attracted to come in and do things with. Rivers State is also known to be a home of hospitality and resourceful businesses.
However, the recent politics going on in the state due to power tussle is almost turning the state into the gutters of instability in governance, uncertainty and economic sabotage.
It all started when the legally elected Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara had fallout with his former boss and his political godfather Nyesom Wike who was former governor of Rivers State and the current FCT Minister.
Ever since their disagreements brewed up and got beyond reconciliation, the politics in the state got more dirty and disturbing. Nobody can really tell the type of agreements that Governor Fubara signed with Nyesom Wike during the time he was making him the next governor to take over from him. Could it be that Nyesom Wike now felt that Governor Fubara breached their contract or failed to abide with the agreements they initially had?
Obviously, high number of Rivers State House of Assembly members who are loyalists to Nyesom Wike also joined forces with their Master to frustrate the leadership of Governor Fubara.
The President of Nigeria at first in the earlier stage of the conflict tried to settle the problem by inviting both parties to Aso Villa for peace talks, but that did not come to fruition as it seemed that maybe the two parties were not ready to shift grounds for each other. The unusual politics happening in the affairs of Rivers State started occupying the media space and news space with people giving their views and opinions on the matter.
The conflict also made its way to courts in order to determine who is right or wrong in the power tussle. However, in the later times, many people believed that President Bola Tinubu is supporting FCT Minister and his affiliated supporters in the ongoing issue.
That could be the more reasons why Nyesom Wike has been so hard-hearted, boastful and brutally confident through his utterances that he has all it takes to destroy the present Governor and can even engineer his impeachment through his loyalists in the Rivers House of Assembly which according to many people are things himself would have never allowed or tolerated from anyone during his tenure as the Governor of the state.
Surprisingly, the people of Nigeria and the people in Rivers State heard President Bola Tinubu declare a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025.
President Bola Tinubu stated some reasons why he took the decision of declaring the state of emergency; in all of the reasons, he was just putting all the strong blames on Governor Fubara but he did not cast any blames on his FCT Minister (Nyesom Wike) and he also did not put any strong blames on the 27 lawmakers of the Rivers State House of Assembly who are all involved in lingering the problem.
The President’s declaration of state of emergency in Rivers State have be condemned by some legal practitioners, political analysts, Senior Advocates of Nigeria like Femi Falana, human rights activists, former President of Nigeria (Goodluck Jonathan) and some other prominent politicians like Atiku Abubakar (former Vice President) and Peter Obi (2023 Labour Party Presidential Candidate) and public figures like Wole Soyinka etc. The President’s action is said to be abuse of power and an attempt to suppress democracy according to many people who voiced out their views on that.
There is fear among many people that the consequences of the politics going on in Rivers State and the current state of emergency could be more destroying than solving anything as the President thinks he is trying to solve.
